The power of perseverance

In 2011, Eto arrived in Australia from Tanzania, where she was born and raised in the Nyarugusu refugee camp. Despite being unable to speak English and feeling overwhelmed by the new environment, she was determined to make the most of this new chapter in her life.

Overcoming language barriers

Like many refugees, Eto struggled to communicate during her first three years in Australia. However, with the support of her teachers and classmates at Wodonga Primary School, she diligently practiced reading and writing to improve her English.

Academic achievements

Eto went on to excel at Wodonga Secondary College, proudly completing Year 12.

Ready to step into life after school, Eto connected with CVGT Employment in Wodonga in July 2022. With the support of the Wodonga Workforce Australia team, she successfully completed a Certificate II in Work Education and a Certificate III in Business at Wodonga TAFE.

Facing employment challenges

“These qualifications opened new doors to employment opportunities for her, but she struggled to land a job,” Jodie Ward, Business Development Officer at CVGT Employment Wodonga, says. “At times she felt defeated, but I did not want her to give up. I encouraged her to keep learning and to continue to think positively.”

Support from CVGT Employment

CVGT Employment enrolled Eto into their tailored digital and resume writing workshops. They also arranged for her to get her Working with Children’s Check and Police Check. After intensive interview support, Eto soon landed a job as a cleaner for Kavya Maintenance Cleaning Services (KMCS).

CVGT Employment have always helped me. They didn’t give up on me and finally found me a job that I love.

Eto’s newfound confidence soon led her to take on a second role at Wodonga Hungry Jack’s.

“She loves working at Hungry Jacks. She’s learnt so many new skills and is an asset to the team there,” Jodie says.

Thriving in her new role

Since starting work, CVGT Employment has continued to provide Eto and her employer with on-the-job support.

“Eto’s friendly nature and excellent communication skills make her a favourite in her team and with the customers. She gets a lot of satisfaction from making sure every space is spotless,” Jodie says.

She’s gained so much confidence since starting work. More recently, she was able to save up and buy a car. I’m so proud of her.
