Craig’s long journey to acceptance

Learning to live with grief and trauma while supporting five daughters as a single parent, Craig has travelled a difficult road.

But with the support of CVGT Employment and meaningful work, he is regaining his sense of identity and purpose.

“I’m slowly restoring my faith in humanity again,” he says.

Overcoming challenges

Craig connected with the CVGT Employment team at Wodonga in August 2024, his wife having passed away and his career as a truck driver having become unfeasible.

I have PTSD. I still don’t fully trust people and I’m still more reserved than I used to be. It has also been a challenge being accepted as a single dad and proving that you’re reliable.

As part of the Disability Employment Service – to be replaced by the Inclusive Employment Australia program later in 2025 – Craig began working with CVGT Employment consultant Denika.

Finding work as a single parent

“Craig went through some difficult weeks where he was down and out,” Denika says.

“After spending appointments with me building confidence and talking through his barriers, Craig came through the other end.

“He never once gave up on his daughters, and while he had some rough times, building a life for them was always at the forefront of his mind.”

After six months in the Disability Employment Services program, Craig’s hard work paid off, securing a job at Battery Services Australia driving a forklift.

“This new role not only ensured his safety but also allowed him to spend more time with his daughters,” Denika says.

“Craig is now thriving in his new position. He seems more confident and content now he has found meaningful employment.

“Recently, he told me he had just purchased his first new car in a long time. This was extremely impactful on Craig. Knowing that he can reliably get to and from work and his children are safe in a vehicle has offered him a great level of peace.”

Power of support

Craig is thankful for the support offered by CVGT Employment.

CVGT Employment have helped with resumes, obtaining my forklift licence. They have virtually helped with everything I needed to get the job.

“On a personal note, they helped keep me motivated and helped me not want to give up – Denika gives me perspective on what’s important and what my capabilities are,” Craig says.

With some stability around his work life, Craig is now in a better position to look ahead and while providing a stable and loving environment for his daughters.
