Karen gets the right support to return to work after 12 years on welfare
A terrible work experience stripped Karen’s confidence away. Suffering poor mental health, she became reliant on social welfare for 12 years. She recently found the perfect job at Thomson Linen Company and couldn’t be happier.
After connecting with the Workforce Australia team CVGT Employment in Mildura, she met employment skills mentor Danella who developed a plan to relaunch her career, starting with one-on-one workshops to help her build her confidence and regain motivation.
Together, they identified industries and job roles she would enjoy. Narrowing down the list, Thomson Linen Company stood out. A family run business with a strong supportive culture – it was the perfect fit.
Danella reached out to owner Lesley who had the ideal position available for Karen – a linen sorter and machine operator, back of house.
Having been out of the workforce for over a decade Karen was hesitant to apply.
Soon she had a change of heart after Danella sold the benefits of work and stepping outside her comfort zone.
Karen finally made the leap, happily working for the past eight weeks.
CVGT Employment has helped me in every way they possibly can – looking after me, clothing, transport, personal support, fuel vouchers!

Danella arrived at Thomson Linen Company on her first day of work with a bunch of flowers to congratulate Karen!
“Her quality of life has improved 100%. Money is coming in, she’s around supportive people,” Danella says of the positive impact work has had on Karen’s life.
“Karen is pleasant, easy to work with, on time, willing and happy to work, picked everything up fast and has a nice personality,” owner Lesley says.
If we can have ten of her that would be great. She is positive, doesn’t get stressed about anything and very respectful.
