Local artist makes her debut at NAIDOC Week game
CVGT Australia Westgate branch is sponsoring North Sunshine Football Club’s NAIDOC Week game against Sunshine Heights tomorrow.
Upcoming Indigenous artist Emma Douglas Bamblett designed the specially commissioned jumpers that feature the CVGT Australia logo.
Manager of our DES program at Westgate, Caroline, says the jumpers will be the first time Emma’s art has been displayed in public.
“Emma is delighted, and a little daunted, to share her work with the world for the first time as part of this fantastic NAIDOC Week event.
“Her artwork depicts ‘Crossroads’, the original name for North Sunshine, and emu footprints representing the meeting of two teams,” says Caroline.
“This is the first time North Sunshine has held a NAIDOC Week game and the club is very excited to make this an ongoing tradition.
“The day is about honouring and celebrating the traditional land owners and spreading awareness of this fantastic week across Australia.
“It has been great to see the conversation going about honouring and acknowledging the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people both at site level and in the wider community.
“We look forward to an ongoing community partnership and sharing what CVGT Australia is about.”
The game will be held at Dempster Park, with co-chair of Reconciliation Victoria Shane Charles opening proceedings with an Acknowledgement of Country. A Smoking Ceremony and didgeridoo performance will follow.
Our Westgate staff will be at the game to chat with any spectators wanting to know more about CVGT Australia.
