If you’ve just finished school, are looking at changing careers or re-entering the workforce, an apprenticeship or traineeship might be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine work and training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. They can be completed full-time, part-time or school-based.

CVGT Employment Apprenticeships & Traineeships are:

  • a pathway to a job you love
  • a great way to learn while you earn
  • one of the best ways to get training and qualifications that are highly regarded by business and industry
  • government regulated

Apprenticeship or Traineeship: what’s the difference?

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships allow you to learn while you earn. You train on the job, study and earn an income all while working towards becoming a qualified tradesperson.

How long does an apprenticeship take?
An apprenticeship normally takes three to four years in traditional trade areas such as carpentry, electrical, hairdressing and plumbing.

What is a traineeship?

Traineeships are similar to apprenticeships, but they concentrate on vocational or job areas such as office administration, information technology or hospitality.

How long does a traineeship take?
A traineeship lasts one to two years. You’ll learn, work and earn and when you successfully complete you will receive (at a minimum) a Certificate II qualification.

How to get started

Once you know what you want to do, you’ll need an employer. There are two ways you can complete an apprenticeship or traineeship, and we can help you with each option:

Apprenticeship or Traineeship

You approach CVGT Employment and ask us to employ you. We’ll look after everything for you, including linking you to an employer in your desired industry, and paying your wage.

School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

A combination of school, paid work and vocational training. While at school we set you up with an employer in your desired industry. It’s another great way to discover the trade or industry that suits you while getting paid.

Under CVGT Employment Apprenticeships & Traineeships, we will employ you and loan you to a host employer for the short or long term.

The best way to find an apprenticeship or traineeship is to first think about what interests you. Then it’s a matter of talking to the right people. CVGT Employment is a great place to start because we’ve have been supporting employers and their apprentices and trainees for 40 years.

Apprenticeships & Traineeships success

Mikhaela is a trainee with the City of Greater Bendigo.

She works in the procurement team helping with the administration for contracts with contract facilitators. Mikhaela enjoys her work and is undertaking a Certificate III in Business.

“The people are really supportive and encourage improvement and learning, everyone is really friendly and is willing to help you in any way that they can.”

She hopes the qualification will help her with future jobs and opportunities within the City, “getting my name out there and gaining experience”.

Meanwhile, she finds her job satisfying and interesting. “I get to handle and see all contracts that happen in Bendigo, my home town, especially big constructions and small contracts that help Bendigo. It’s interesting to know what is happening in my town.”

School-based learning

A School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) enables senior secondary students to begin their apprenticeship or traineeship in years 10, 11 or 12, combining paid employment and structured work-related training.

SBATs are a pathway to employment in a trade or occupation, self-employment, further training or higher education. Apprenticeships and traineeships have similar structures and requirements, however they differ in occupations offered, length and Australian Qualified Framework certificate levels.

As a school-based apprentice or trainee, you will have a host employer who will employ and train you on the job, plus you will do some formal off-the-job training at Bendigo TAFE that will lead to a VET qualification. You will attend school part of the week, go to work on some days and attend Bendigo TAFE on other days.

Traineeship and apprenticeship support

An employer and an apprentice or trainee must agree to a training contract and training plan before training can start. If the apprentice or trainee is under 18, the parent or guardian must also agree.

When we employ you, we loan you to a host employer for the short or long-term. We remain responsible for the quality and continuity of each apprentice’s and trainee’s employment and training. We also manage the additional care and support necessary to achieve the successful completion of the training contract.

CVGT Employment Apprenticeships & Traineeships is a risk-free, flexible alternative.

A Group Training apprenticeship or traineeship is an arrangement where CVGT Employment (also known as a GTO) employs apprentices and trainees under training contract and places them with host employers.
