Skills for Life Albury empowers First Nation participants

Recently, we proudly celebrated the graduation of six CVGT Employment participants who participated in the Skills for Life training in Albury. Skills for Life aims to empower First Nation participants by giving them essential job skills and specialised training to create clear paths to employment. The program also focuses on personal growth and cultural connection.

About Skills for Life

Skills for Life helps participants build confidence, self-worth, and a sense of belonging. It uses the ‘8 Ways of Learning’ and the ‘Core Skills for Work Developmental Frameworks’ to deliver a well-rounded approach to skill development. The program is run by Gadhungal Marring and One Training, focusing on cultural connection and including Indigenous training.

Cultural integration

A unique aspect of the Skills for Life initiative is its commitment to cultural inclusivity. The program respects the unique heritage of First Nations people. By creating a supportive environment, it helps participants succeed in employment and promotes personal development and well-being. This approach not only prepares participants for the workforce but also strengthens their connection to their cultural heritage.

Skills for Life Corroboree

On Thursday, 5 September, the Albury Workforce Australia team had the privilege of attending the Skills for Life Corroboree. This event brought together service providers and Indigenous participants for a day of cultural celebration and learning.

The Corroboree began with vibrant outdoor dances, setting a lively and welcoming tone. Following the performances, attendees were invited inside to learn more about the Skills for Life program.

We were thrilled six of our participants enrolled in the three-week course. This program is designed to foster personal and professional development, and we were eager to witness the growth of our participants over the coming weeks and during their six-month mentoring period.

The day also provided an opportunity for socialising and connection over a BBQ lunch.

Voices of culture

“The program has seen participants collaborate in small groups to create their ‘Voices of Culture’ presentations, a project that enhances essential soft skills such as time management, teamwork, communication, and task prioritisation,” says Lisa.

Services Australia and Service NSW delivered workshops to the participants, adding immense value and support to the program. Their involvement educated participants about the services and support available to them.

Employer spotlight session

In the final week of the program, eleven employers who supported the Skills for Life initiative participated in an ‘Employer Spotlight Session’.

This was a fantastic opportunity for participants to network and explore potential job opportunities.

Participants also obtained a white card as part of the course, received a laptop and 12 months of Wi-Fi credit, providing them with essential tools for their job search and further learning.

Celebrating success and future opportunities

“We celebrated the success of Skills for Life, and the remarkable achievements of our participants with a graduation ceremony on Friday, 27 September 2024.”

The facilitators will remain in regular contact with the graduates, helping them to explore future possible employment opportunities.

The graduates are definitely pleased with completing the program and feel more motivated towards their employment ambitions.
