Turning a young life around
*Kayden’s story will be familiar to many young people who have struggled to find work since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sitting at home, unemployed, unmotivated and unvaccinated, Kayden was in his early 20s and wanted independence. But he didn’t know where to start.
It was a connection with CVGT Australia that got his career on the right track.
“When he was first referred to CVGT he was unvaccinated and didn’t have any desire to do so, or gain employment,” CVGT consultant and youth employment specialist Jess says.
“He hardly knew what a resume was, let alone how to effectively search for work.”
Kayden was linked with our Transition to Work program. It supports people aged 15-24 across the Goulburn Murray and Border regions to get into employment or study.
Soon he had a change of heart on vaccination, allowing him to connect more easily with his consultant.
He was now able to take part in training, learning how to write a resume and present himself at an interview. CVGT Australia was also able to help financially with clothing and a bicycle for getting to appointments.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Kayden secured an interview with a local retailer, but didn’t get the job.
“After the interview, I called to ask for some feedback,” Jess says.
“It was a disappointing result but his experience meant we could work on these areas to ensure his next interview would be far better.”
It wasn’t long before another position opened up
“Kayden then had an open interview with a fast-food restaurant. From all reports he did really well, and he was offered the job on the spot!
“He recently completed his training and is thoroughly enjoying being able to have financial independence for the first time in his life.
“Given that not long ago he was sitting at home unvaccinated and not wanting to work, to be where he is now is fantastic. He has been very reliable and engaging in the program completely.
“His manager has even been into contact to let us know about the wonderful job he is doing. They said if there are any more participants just like him to send them down!”
Kayden’s story is a great example of how a little support is sometimes all that’s needed to get your career started.
